Kolkata Police to File Petition for Bail Cancellation in Kankulia Violence Case
Kolkata Police is preparing to approach the Calcutta High Court to seek the cancellation of bail for nine individuals accused in connection with the violent incident that occurred in Kankulia on February 1. Officers confirmed this development on Sunday, highlighting a strategic move to target those they deem as the primary orchestrators of the unrest.
Targeting the Alleged Masterminds
Police officials stated that they intend to file a petition specifically against nine out of the seventeen persons who were previously released on bail. These nine individuals have been identified as the masterminds behind the Kankulia violence, indicating a focused effort to hold the key perpetrators accountable. Investigators revealed that two of these nine accused are believed to have close associations with Kasba-Tiljala strongman, Sona Pappu, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
Current Status of Arrests and Investigations
So far, a total of twenty-three persons have been arrested in relation to the Kankulia violence. However, Sona Pappu, who is named in the First Information Report (FIR), has not been apprehended yet. Police did not provide specific details on whether a non-bailable warrant has been issued against him or if he is currently absconding. Nevertheless, authorities emphasized that efforts to trace and locate Pappu are ongoing and active.
In preparation for the legal proceedings, officers are meticulously reviewing the bail orders and the comprehensive case diary. This review aims to strengthen their petition and ensure a robust argument for the cancellation of bail, based on the severity of the charges and the alleged roles of the accused.
Separate Incident of Clash in Kankulia
In a separate and unrelated incident reported on Sunday, a seventeen-year-old female resident of Kankulia alleged that a violent clash erupted in the area around 10 PM. The altercation began following an argument over a chair with her family at a local club. According to her complaint, a group of individuals assaulted her family members and tore their clothes during the confrontation.
The teenager further claimed that when she and her mother attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, women from the opposing side also attacked them. The assailants reportedly fled the scene only after neighbors arrived upon hearing their cries for help. Based on this complaint, the Gariahat police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
This recent incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the Kankulia locality, even as police continue their efforts to address the broader violence from February 1. The dual focus on legal action against the masterminds and responding to new complaints highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order and justice in the area.
