In a significant move to streamline traffic management ahead of major infrastructure work, the Kolkata Traffic Police has commenced night traffic trials at Chingrighata, starting from Thursday. These trials are designed to gather crucial hourly data on traffic volume, which will inform future adjustments during the metro viaduct construction phase.
Details of the Night Traffic Trials
The trials are being conducted using a newly designated slip road located near Captain Bhery. This route connects the Ultadanga-bound flank from the Chingrighata flyover to Beliaghata Canal Road and EM Bypass, providing an alternative pathway for vehicles. According to police officials, the trials will persist over the next several days to ensure comprehensive data collection.
Trial Timings and Flexibility
The initial trial cycle begins between 8 am and 8.30 am, continuing until 11 am to 11.30 am. A subsequent cycle runs from 5 pm until 8 pm to 8.30 pm. However, authorities have emphasized that these timings are subject to change based on real-time traffic needs and conditions. An officer leading the trials noted, "This cycle may change as per need," highlighting the adaptive nature of the initiative.
Preparation for Metro Construction
Sources indicate that these trials are a critical preparatory step before the implementation of two weekend night traffic blocks at Chingrighata scheduled for February. These blocks are necessary for the ongoing metro viaduct construction by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao explained, "We will familiarise motorists at night with the new road and study signal cycles before the RVNL carries out construction." This proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and enhance safety during the construction period.
Infrastructure and Route Adjustments
As part of the trials, vehicles will utilize the new road near Captain Bhery, situated to the left of the Chingrighata Flyover, to reach Majherpara. The route includes several curves before converging back at the main crossing. Additionally, a traffic post has been established at Majherpara, facilitated by Metro covering the expenses, as confirmed by a police source. This setup is intended to improve traffic monitoring and management in the area.
