Violent Clash Erupts in Kolkata's Jadavpur Over Reckless Bike Riding Dispute

Tension gripped the Jamunanagar area of east Jadavpur in Kolkata after a protest over negligent bike riding spiraled into a violent confrontation between two groups. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, resulted in widespread brickbatting, vandalism, and injuries, prompting a significant police response to restore order.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to local residents and police officials, the conflict began around 8 pm when a local man, Rabi Naskar, protested against Ankit Jaiswal for riding his motorcycle in a reckless and dangerous manner. This protest reportedly angered Ankit, who then called several friends to the scene. The group allegedly assaulted Naskar, with some locals claiming they even attempted to set him on fire, though police have denied this specific allegation, confirming only that he was assaulted.

Witnesses stated that after seeing Naskar's condition, other locals decided to lodge a strong complaint. A few residents went to Ankit's residence, demanding that he come out and apologize for his actions. However, instead of complying, Ankit once again called his friends for backup.

Escalation into Violence and Vandalism

Over two dozen men arrived on motorcycles, armed with brickbats, rods, and steel pipes. They reportedly assaulted the protesters gathered outside Ankit's home and went on to vandalize several shops and two-wheelers in the area. The clash led to large-scale brickbatting, with locals alleging that at least seven people were injured during the violence. Police, however, have denied that any weapons were used in the incident.

Police Response and Arrests

In response to the escalating situation, Kolkata Police personnel, along with central forces, were deployed to the area to ensure peace and prevent further unrest. A case has been registered at the East Jadavpur Police Station under charges of attempt to murder and additional sections of the Arms Act.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the clash. The arrested persons are:

  • Ankit Jaiswal (19), a resident of Jamunanagar
  • Himansu Kumar (19), from Khudirabad
  • Sagar Balmiki (26), also of Jamunanagar
  • Aman Shaw (24), from Adarsha Nagar

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Naren Das (35), a resident of Jamunanagar. All four accused are scheduled to be produced before the ACJM Court in Alipore, where police will seek remand for further investigation. Authorities have also launched raids to trace and apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the violent incident.

Community Impact and Ongoing Tensions

The clash has left the local community on edge, with residents expressing concerns over safety and the rapid escalation of what began as a simple protest. The deployment of central forces alongside local police underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the situation to prevent any recurrence of violence.

As investigations continue, the incident highlights the potential for minor disputes to escalate into significant public disturbances, emphasizing the need for prompt and effective conflict resolution mechanisms in urban areas.
