The principal district and sessions court in Koppal has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing 15 persons to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a murder that occurred during a village fair in 2019. The murder unfolded on March 27, 2019, during the Sharana Basaveshwara Jatra in Taluvagera village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Kushtagi police. According to the prosecution's case, complainant Jagadish Hawaldar and his friends were walking near the Durugamma temple when they encountered a group of 17 accused individuals.
This group was reportedly armed with various weapons, including clubs, cricket stumps, stones, and chilli powder. An altercation ensued, allegedly initiated by the accused who picked a quarrel with Hawaldar and his companions. During the violent confrontation, Mallappa Kandakoor was brutally assaulted with a cricket stump and stones, leading to his immediate death at the scene.
Jagadish Hawaldar and several others sustained both grievous and minor injuries during the attack. The complaint further detailed that women among the accused participated by throwing chilli powder and issuing death threats, adding to the chaos and severity of the incident.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, a formal case was registered at the Kushtagi police station. The investigation was led by police circle inspector Suresh Talawar, who meticulously gathered evidence and witness statements. After completing the investigation, Talawar filed a comprehensive charge sheet before the court, outlining the roles and actions of each accused individual.
On February 28, principal district and sessions judge C Chandrashekar pronounced the judgment after evaluating all evidence presented during the trial. In addition to the seven-year rigorous imprisonment sentences, the court imposed a total fine of Rs 4,12,500 on the convicted individuals. Of the total fine amount, 40% (Rs 1,65,000) has been ordered to be paid as compensation to the parents of the deceased Mallappa Kandakoor.
