Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A traffic police constable in Latur district was suspended on Tuesday after a video clip allegedly showed him pushing a moving motorcyclist while trying to stop the two-wheeler during a traffic check near Mini Market on Sunday, causing the rider to lose balance, crash into a roadside divider and fall.
Video Triggers Debate on Enforcement Methods
The video clip, captured on a car's dash camera, was uploaded on social media platforms recently, triggering a broader debate over traffic enforcement methods. Taking serious cognisance of the clip, Latur superintendent of police Amol Tambe on Monday ordered an inquiry and directed sub-divisional police officer Sameersingh Salve to submit a detailed report.
Preliminary Findings Lead to Suspension
According to a press statement issued on Tuesday, constable Sharad Kande from the traffic branch was attempting to stop the motorcyclist for an alleged traffic violation when the incident occurred. The preliminary inquiry found lapses in his handling of the situation, the statement stated.
Based on the preliminary findings, SP Tambe ordered Kande's immediate suspension and initiated a departmental inquiry against him. “The inquiry report has established misconduct on the part of the police constable. Accordingly, orders have been issued for his immediate suspension and for conducting a departmental inquiry,” Tambe said.
The police have not yet disclosed details about the injuries suffered by the motorcyclist, nor clarified whether a separate criminal case has been registered in connection with the incident. The incident has raised questions about the conduct of traffic enforcement personnel and the need for better training and protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future. Further investigations are ongoing, and the departmental inquiry is expected to provide more clarity on the matter.
