Kendrapada: The additional district and sessions court in Jagatsinghpur on Wednesday sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of a 32-year-old man from Kulakaijanga village under Biridi police station, a crime that occurred 27 years ago. The court also imposed fines of Rs 5,000 each on the convicts, with a default sentence of an additional six months in case of non-payment.
Details of the Crime
The convicts, identified as Basudev Behera (60) and Gouranga Mohanty (62), were found guilty of killing Birabara Behera, a medicine shop owner. The murder took place on January 13, 1999, at Biridi Haat when the victim was returning to his village after closing his shop. The assailants used a sword and other sharp weapons to carry out the attack. Past enmity was cited as the primary motive behind the murder.
Legal Proceedings and Verdict
Acting on a complaint filed by Pratima Behera, the wife of the deceased, the police arrested the two accused. During the trial, the prosecution presented 10 witnesses, including police officers and medical reports, to establish the guilt of the accused. After thoroughly examining the evidence, the court pronounced the life imprisonment sentence, according to Dilip Pradhan, the public prosecutor.
