Cachar Fast-Track Court Delivers Life Sentences in 22-Year-Old Murder Case
A fast-track court in Cachar district has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing three men to life imprisonment for the murder of a youth in November 2004. The trial, which spanned an arduous 22 years, concluded with the court imposing strict penalties on the convicts.

The court of additional district and sessions judge Bankim Sharma, presiding over the fast-track court, convicted Dhanraj Surana (55), Rinku Deb alias Madhusudan (43), and Ratan Debnath (40) under Sections 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code. These charges pertain to the murder of Munna Majumdar, a 24-year-old resident of Shiv Colony in Silchar.
The court also mandated a fine of Rs 20,000 for each convict. In case of failure to pay this stipulated fine, an additional six months of imprisonment will be imposed, underscoring the severity of the judgment.
Details of the 2004 Murder Case
The case, which garnered widespread attention across Silchar in 2004, began when Majumdar's body was discovered under mysterious circumstances at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on the night of November 5. According to prosecution accounts, Deb, Debnath, and Majumdar were all employed at Surana Textile, a business owned by Surana in the Janiganj area of Cachar.
On the fateful night, Deb allegedly visited Majumdar's residence and informed his family that Majumdar had fallen seriously ill and required admission to SMCH for treatment. When the family rushed to the hospital, the three accused reportedly assured them that Majumdar was undergoing treatment and advised them to return home.
Suspicious of foul play, the family later returned to the hospital only to find the accused had fled. Majumdar's body was left lying in a corridor, bearing multiple injury marks, which raised immediate alarms.
Family's Response and Community Outcry
Acting swiftly, Majumdar's sister, Ratna, filed a First Information Report at Sadar police station, accusing the trio of murdering her brother. This incident triggered massive protests across Silchar, with demonstrations, vandalism, and arson reported from several parts of Cachar town.
The situation escalated to such a degree that the district administration was compelled to impose a curfew to prevent further breakdowns in law and order. The community's outrage highlighted the deep impact of the crime on local sentiments.
