A local court in Aligarh has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment for the horrific rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl that occurred in December 2012. The judgment was pronounced by Additional District Judge Anju Rajput on Wednesday, marking the culmination of a prolonged legal battle that spanned over ten years.
Details of the Heinous Crime and Court Proceedings
The incident took place on December 27, 2012, in a village under the jurisdiction of Aligarh district. According to the victim's father, who lodged the initial complaint, the convict, who was 21 years old at the time, had been pressuring the teenager for sexual favors. In the early hours of that fateful day, around 4:30 AM, the girl went to the fields to defecate when she was attacked from behind by the man and his associate.
The attackers raped the girl, and when she screamed for help, farmers working in a nearby field rushed to the spot. However, the assailants threatened them by brandishing a pistol, creating chaos. Before fleeing the scene, they stabbed the victim to death, ensuring she could not testify against them.
Legal Charges and Investigation
A case was promptly registered under Sections 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused was arrested and spent approximately ten years in jail before being released on bail as the trial continued. The court meticulously examined all evidence and witnesses presented during the proceedings.
Additional District Government Counsel Swarnlata Verma provided crucial insights into the case. She confirmed that the court not only imposed a life sentence but also levied a fine of Rs 70,000 on the convict. This financial penalty adds an extra layer of accountability for the heinous act.
