Ajmer Court Imposes Life Sentence for Acid Attack on Mother and Daughter
In a significant ruling, a court in Ajmer delivered justice on Wednesday by sentencing a 28-year-old man to life imprisonment for a horrific acid attack on a woman and her 12-year-old daughter at Chittorgarh railway station. The attack, which occurred a year ago, resulted in the young girl completely losing vision in one eye and partially losing vision in the other, highlighting the severe and lasting impact of such crimes.
Details of the Attack and Legal Proceedings
According to public prosecutor Naresh Kumar, the incident took place on April 25 last year when the victims boarded a train from Ajmer to Chittorgarh. The following day, at Chittorgarh railway station, they went to a spot near the rail tracks for urination. It was there that the accused, identified as Mohammad Ismail, a resident of Mau district in Madhya Pradesh, approached them. He opened a bottle he was carrying and poured acid upon both the woman and her daughter, causing devastating injuries.
Both victims were hospitalised for many days, with the mother suffering burns all over her body. The court not only handed down the life sentence but also directed compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the young girl, acknowledging the profound physical and emotional trauma inflicted upon her.
Broader Implications and Justice Served
This case underscores the critical need for stringent legal measures against acid attacks, which often leave victims with lifelong scars and disabilities. The court's decision to award compensation reflects a growing recognition of the financial burdens faced by survivors in their recovery and rehabilitation. The sentencing sends a strong message about the severity of such crimes and the commitment of the judicial system to uphold justice for victims of violence.
As communities grapple with the aftermath of such attacks, this ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of public awareness and support for survivors. The legal outcome in Ajmer marks a step forward in the fight against gender-based violence and the protection of vulnerable individuals in society.
