Barabanki Court Delivers Life Sentences in 2016 Land Dispute Murder
A local court in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, has handed down life imprisonment sentences to three individuals involved in a brutal 2016 murder stemming from a land dispute. The verdict was pronounced on Wednesday, bringing a significant conclusion to a case that has spanned several years.
Details of the Conviction and Sentencing
The Additional District Judge court imposed life imprisonment on Suraj (32), his father Matru, and his uncle Gudar. In addition to the prison terms, each convict was fined Rs 78,500. The court directed that the total fine amount of Rs 235,500 be paid as compensation to the wife of the deceased victim, Barsati.
Background of the 2016 Murder Case
The incident dates back to August 2, 2016, when an FIR was lodged at the Subeha police station. The complaint reported that Barsati was assaulted by Matru, Suraj, Gudar, and another individual named Surjeet. Barsati succumbed to his injuries during treatment, leading to the registration of a murder case against the accused.
During the trial, one of the accused, Surjeet, passed away. On the day of the final hearing, Suraj, who was out on bail, appeared in court alongside Gudar, while Matru was brought from jail. Following the conviction, Suraj managed to flee from the courtroom around 3 pm on February 7.
Manhunt and Arrest of Fugitive Convict
After Suraj's escape, authorities launched a massive search operation. Barabanki Circle Officer Sangam Kumar successfully traced Suraj to his in-laws' residence in Amethi, where he was arrested. Suraj was subsequently produced before the court on Wednesday to receive his sentence along with the other convicts.
This case highlights the severe consequences of violent disputes over land and the judicial system's commitment to delivering justice, even in the face of challenges such as a convict attempting to evade punishment.
