A local court in Ludhiana has sentenced Swaran Singh to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of his seven-year-old nephew, Sahajpreet Singh, in a case that remained unsolved for nearly four years. Additional Sessions Judge Dr Rajneesh also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convicted man, a resident of Abdulapur Basti.
Case Background and Disappearance
The incident dates back to August 18, 2022, when Sahajpreet went missing from his home in Abdulapur Basti. His mother, Simranjit Kaur, filed a missing person report at the Model Town police station the following day. Despite an extensive search by the family, the child could not be traced.
During the investigation, police discovered that the child's paternal uncle, Swaran Singh, had taken him on his motorcycle on the day of the disappearance. Based on scientific and circumstantial evidence, the investigating team interrogated the accused. Following his disclosure statement, the child's body was recovered from a canal.
Motive: Property and Personal Animosity
The prosecution alleged that Swaran Singh had strained relations with his sister-in-law and felt humiliated by her. Since Sahajpreet was the only son in the family, the accused believed that after the child's death, the family property would eventually pass to his own children. This alleged greed and personal animosity prompted him to commit the crime.
Trial and Conviction
During the trial, the prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence, the recovery of the body, forensic evidence, and the testimonies of several witnesses. After evaluating all the evidence, the court held that the prosecution had successfully established the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. The accused pleaded innocence, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
Legal and Social Implications
The case highlights the tragic consequences of property disputes within families. The court's verdict underscores the importance of circumstantial and forensic evidence in solving blind murder cases. The life imprisonment sentence serves as a deterrent against such heinous crimes motivated by greed and personal vendetta.
