Members of the Karnataka Rajya Akshara Dasoha Employees Association staged a protest in Hassan on Friday, July 10, demanding a hike in their honorarium. The association observed the day as a 'Black Day' for Akshara Dasoha employees to highlight their long-standing grievances.
Protest at Hemavathi Statue
The demonstrators gathered in front of the Hemavathi statue in Hassan, holding placards and raising slogans. They urged the state government to address their demand for an increased honorarium, which they argue has not kept pace with rising living costs and the essential nature of their work in providing midday meals to schoolchildren.
According to association leaders, the current honorarium is insufficient and fails to recognize the critical role these employees play in the education system. The protest was part of a broader statewide campaign to press for better compensation and working conditions.
Demand for Immediate Action
Speaking at the protest, a senior association member stated, "Our employees work tirelessly to ensure that children receive nutritious meals, yet we are paid a pittance. The government must immediately revise the honorarium to reflect our contribution." The association has threatened to escalate the agitation if their demands are not met by the end of the month.
The protest saw participation from hundreds of employees across Hassan district. They submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, requesting intervention and a favorable decision from the state government.
Background of the Issue
The Akshara Dasoha scheme, which provides midday meals in government schools, employs thousands of workers across Karnataka. These employees have been demanding a hike in honorarium for several years, citing inflation and the physical demands of their job. Previous protests have been met with assurances but no concrete action, leading to the current demonstration.
