Kumaraswamy Slams Chief Minister Over Drought Neglect
Former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday, accusing him of prioritizing foreign trips over addressing the severe drought crisis gripping the state. Kumaraswamy alleged that the chief minister had kept the people of Karnataka in the dark on a sensitive issue that required urgent discussion with all stakeholders.
Allegations of 'Jolly Trips' Amid Drought
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy claimed that Shivakumar had been undertaking what he termed "jolly trips" abroad while farmers in Karnataka were suffering due to lack of water and crop failure. He demanded that the chief minister immediately convene an all-party meeting to discuss drought mitigation strategies and provide relief to affected regions. "The chief minister is more interested in globe-trotting than in solving the problems of his own people," Kumaraswamy said.
According to Kumaraswamy, the drought situation in several districts of Karnataka has reached alarming levels, with reservoirs drying up and drinking water scarcity becoming acute. He cited reports indicating that over 100 taluks are facing severe drought conditions, affecting millions of farmers and daily wage laborers. The former CM urged the state government to declare the drought a national calamity and seek immediate assistance from the central government.
Shivakumar's Response and Government's Stand
In response, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar defended his foreign trips, stating that they were aimed at attracting investments and promoting Karnataka's interests globally. He dismissed Kumaraswamy's allegations as politically motivated and accused the JD(S) leader of spreading misinformation. "The government is fully aware of the drought situation and has already released funds for relief works. We have also sought additional support from the Centre," Shivakumar said in a statement.
The state government has allocated Rs 500 crore for drought relief and is implementing measures such as providing drinking water through tankers and creating fodder camps for cattle. However, opposition parties have criticized the response as inadequate, demanding a comprehensive action plan and compensation for affected farmers.
Political Fallout and Public Reaction
The war of words between Kumaraswamy and Shivakumar has intensified political tensions in Karnataka, with the Congress government facing scrutiny over its handling of the drought. Farmers' organizations have also joined the chorus, staging protests in several districts to demand immediate relief. As the crisis deepens, all eyes are on the state government to deliver on its promises and ensure that no community is left without access to water and livelihood support.
