The Lokayukta police carried out coordinated raids on 25 illegal sand mining sites in Shivamogga district, resulting in the seizure of approximately 17,000 metric tonnes of sand. The operation involved personnel from Davanagere, Chitradurga, Chikkamagaluru, Haveri, and Belagavi districts, highlighting the widespread nature of illegal sand mining in the region.
Massive Seizure in Crackdown
According to officials, the raids were conducted based on intelligence inputs about rampant illegal extraction of sand from riverbeds and other sources. The seized sand is estimated to be worth several crores of rupees. Lokayukta teams meticulously surveyed the sites before launching the simultaneous operations to prevent any escape or destruction of evidence.
Multi-District Operation
The involvement of personnel from five districts underscores the scale of the problem and the coordinated effort required to tackle it. Each team was tasked with specific targets, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the affected areas. The operation was led by senior Lokayukta officers who supervised the entire process.
Impact on Environment and Economy
Illegal sand mining has severe environmental consequences, including riverbank erosion, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of aquatic ecosystems. Economically, it deprives the state of legitimate revenue and undermines the legal mining industry. The Lokayukta's action is seen as a significant step towards curbing this illicit activity.
Further investigations are underway to identify the masterminds behind these operations, and legal proceedings will follow. The Lokayukta has urged the public to report any suspicious sand mining activities to help protect natural resources.
