Mandya: Lokayukta police have apprehended an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) attached to the Malavalli Rural police station on charges of accepting a bribe to facilitate station bail for an accused individual. The operation took place late Wednesday evening, following a well-coordinated trap set by the anti-corruption agency.
Details of the Incident
According to Lokayukta officials, ASI Shivakumar allegedly demanded a sum of Rs 10,000 from Rajegowda, a resident of Malavalli. The bribe was sought to settle a case registered against Rajegowda after a local altercation and to secure his release on station bail. Unwilling to comply with the illegal demand, Rajegowda approached the Lokayukta police and lodged a formal complaint. He also provided an audio recording of a phone conversation in which the ASI explicitly demanded the money.
Execution of the Trap
Acting on the complaint, Lokayukta officials laid a trap and caught the ASI red-handed while he was accepting the bribe. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Lokayukta Superintendent of Police S Sureshbabu. The team included Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar, inspectors Lepakshamurthy and Byatarayagowda, along with other personnel. The ASI was taken into custody immediately after the incident.
Legal Proceedings
The accused ASI has been arrested, and further investigation is underway. The Lokayukta police are examining the audio evidence and other materials to build a strong case against the officer. This operation underscores the commitment of the Lokayukta in tackling corruption within the police force.
