Lucknow Fire: Gutted Building Was Residential, Got Demolition Order in 2016

The building that was gutted in a massive fire in Lucknow's upscale Aliganj Scheme locality was originally approved for residential use but had received a demolition order in 2016 for unauthorised construction, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out late Monday night in Sector D of Aliganj, engulfing the multi-storey structure and causing extensive damage. No casualties were reported, but several families were displaced as the fire rapidly spread through the building.

Building Approval and Demolition Order

According to Lucknow Municipal Corporation records, the building was granted approval for residential purposes only. However, over the years, the structure had been altered without proper permissions, leading the corporation to issue a demolition order in 2016. The order cited unauthorised construction that violated building bylaws.

“The building was originally sanctioned as a residential complex. But subsequent modifications were made without approval. A demolition notice was served in 2016, but the order could not be executed due to legal stay or other reasons,” said a senior municipal official on condition of anonymity.

Fire Incident and Response

The fire started around 10:30 pm on Monday from the ground floor and quickly spread to upper floors due to combustible materials stored inside. Fire tenders from multiple stations were rushed to the spot, and the blaze was brought under control after nearly three hours.

Residents reported that the building lacked adequate fire safety measures, including fire extinguishers and emergency exits. “We heard screams and saw flames. There was no alarm system. We just ran out,” said a resident who escaped unhurt.

Investigation and Legal Action

Lucknow District Magistrate has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, focusing on the building's compliance with fire safety norms and the status of the demolition order. Police have registered a case against the building owner under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Fire Safety Act.

“We are investigating why the demolition order was not implemented and whether negligence led to the fire. Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” said a police spokesperson.

The incident has raised concerns about safety standards in old residential buildings in Lucknow, with many lacking proper fire-fighting equipment and clear escape routes.
