Lucknow Authorities Launch Strict Drive Against Modified Vehicle Silencers
In a significant move to combat noise pollution, Lucknow has initiated a rigorous enforcement drive targeting vehicles equipped with modified silencers. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, using such accessories can now result in a fine of Rs 5,000. This campaign, which began on April 17, is a joint effort by the transport department and traffic police, acting on directives from the high court.
Focus on Noise Pollution and Enforcement Actions
The drive specifically aims to reduce noise pollution on city roads, with a special emphasis on vehicles like Bullet motorcycles, which have been frequently found violating norms. According to Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, noisy vehicles may face a hefty fine of up to Rs 10,000. In just the first two days of the campaign, authorities issued challans to 33 vehicles with modified silencers and impounded 9 vehicles at police stations.
RTO (Enforcement) Prabhat Pandey stated, "We are taking strict action against not only vehicle owners but also those involved in the sale and installation of these accessories." Letters have been served to around 20 spare parts shop owners in Lalbagh, informing them of the legal provisions and directing them to attend a meeting at the RTO office on April 20.
Targeting Sellers and Installers of Modified Accessories
The crackdown extends beyond vehicle owners to include shopkeepers, showroom owners, and garage proprietors who sell or fit modified silencers, hooters, sirens, and pressure horns. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, these individuals could face severe penalties, including a maximum imprisonment of one year or a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
To enhance public awareness, the department is installing hoardings at key locations and preparing to distribute informational pamphlets. This multi-pronged approach seeks to educate citizens about the dangers of noise pollution and the legal consequences of using modified vehicle parts.
