Lucknow Police Arrests Two More in Online Dating App Extortion Gang
In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, Lucknow Police on Sunday arrested two additional accused from a gang involved in a sophisticated extortion racket. The gang targeted victims through online dating apps, filmed them in compromising situations, and extorted money through blackmail.
Arrests and Operation Details
The accused, identified as Vansh Rastogi (19) and Rishabh Rastogi (21), both residents of Chinhat, were apprehended in a joint operation. The operation was conducted by the SWAT/Surveillance team under the supervision of the DCP North, in collaboration with the Aliganj police. During interrogation, the two confessed to their involvement in the crimes and admitted to carrying out similar offenses in the past.
Police recovered three mobile phones and Rs 390 in cash from their possession. The seized mobile phones are being sent for forensic examination to retrieve digital evidence, which could be crucial in building a strong case against the accused.
Modus Operandi of the Gang
According to police investigations, the gang used the dating app Grindr to contact potential victims. One member of the gang would first visit the victim's room or house under false pretenses. Once inside, other gang members would enter on a pre-arranged signal.
The accused would then record objectionable videos of the victim without their consent. Using these videos as leverage, they threatened to circulate them publicly unless the victims complied with their demands. Victims were coerced into transferring money online and were also robbed of cash, mobile phones, and other valuables during the incidents.
Case Background and Previous Arrests
The case came to light after an FIR was registered at the Aliganj police station on March 15. The complaint alleged forced entry, assault, robbery, and online extortion. Following the registration of the FIR, police made the first arrests on March 16, apprehending four individuals, including a minor. The minor was subsequently sent to a reform home.
Authorities are now verifying the criminal history of the newly arrested accused and probing their potential involvement in other similar cases across various districts. This investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the gang's activities and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
Ongoing Investigations and Future Steps
Police officials have emphasized that the forensic examination of the mobile phones will play a key role in gathering digital evidence. This evidence is expected to help in identifying more victims and linking the accused to other crimes. The authorities are also working to raise awareness about such cybercrimes and advise the public to exercise caution while using online dating platforms.
The arrests highlight the growing threat of cyber-enabled extortion and the proactive measures being taken by law enforcement agencies to combat such offenses. Lucknow Police have urged victims of similar crimes to come forward and report incidents to prevent further victimization.
