Lucknow Police Launch Public Outreach to Curb Fuel Panic Buying

In response to unusually long queues forming at fuel stations across Lucknow, the police have ramped up their public outreach efforts, urging residents to remain calm and avoid panic buying of petrol and diesel. The initiative aims to address a sudden surge in fuel consumption driven by public anxiety.

Police Reassure Citizens on Fuel Availability

The Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) for Lucknow, Babloo Kumar, addressed the media on Thursday to reassure citizens that there is no actual shortage of fuel in the city. He emphasized that approximately 290 petrol pumps in Lucknow are adequately stocked to meet normal demand.

"There has been a sudden increase of nearly 40% in fuel purchase compared to normal days due to panic buying," JCP Kumar stated. "This artificial spike is putting unnecessary pressure on distribution networks and could disrupt otherwise stable supply chains."

Intensified Police Measures Across the City

To counteract the situation, police teams have been deployed throughout Lucknow, making announcements via loudspeakers and directly appealing to the public at busy intersections and fuel stations. Officers have been spotted in key areas such as Chowk, Gomtinagar, and Indiranagar, using loudspeakers to advise people against rushing for refuelling or filling their tanks unnecessarily.

"Fuel is available in ample quantity. Citizens should purchase only as per their immediate requirement. There is no need to hoard," the JCP emphasized during the outreach efforts.

Impact of Panic Buying on City Infrastructure

The panic-driven behaviour has led to several negative consequences:

  • Crowding at petrol pumps, increasing the risk of accidents and law-and-order issues.
  • Heightened traffic congestion in multiple areas, disrupting daily commutes.
  • Temporary shortages at specific outlets, despite overall fuel availability in the city.

Police have stepped up monitoring at key locations to ensure orderly supply and prevent any disruptions. JCP Kumar warned that continued panic buying could exacerbate these issues, urging the public to cooperate and maintain calm.

The outreach campaign underscores the police's proactive approach to managing public sentiment and ensuring that fuel distribution remains smooth and efficient across Lucknow.
