An assistant professor from the zoology department of Lucknow University has been arrested following allegations that he leaked examination question papers and made inappropriate advances towards a female student. The controversy erupted after viral audio clips surfaced, in which the professor is allegedly heard discussing the exchange of papers and pressuring the student to meet him before exams.
Details of the Allegations
In the audio recordings, the professor is heard saying, “Darling, I have retrieved two papers for you. When will you come meet me?” He also allegedly asked the student to meet him within seven days before the examinations, promising academic favours and leaked question papers. The clips went viral on campus, sparking outrage among students and faculty.
Police Action and FIR
The professor was detained by police on Friday after a complaint was registered at Hasanganj police station on May 15. The complaint, submitted by the university’s Controller of Examinations, accused the teacher of engaging in obscene conversations and attempting to lure the student with promises of academic benefits. An FIR has been filed under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (outraging the modesty of a woman) and Sections 11 and 13(5) of the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
DCP Central Zone Vikrant Vir confirmed that the student had submitted audio recordings to the university administration. The university formed an internal inquiry committee before approaching the police. Investigators are now examining the authenticity of the clips and probing whether any final-year zoology papers were actually leaked or if there was an attempt to manipulate the examination process.
Audio Recordings Submitted
According to the complaint, three separate audio recordings were submitted to the university. In these clips, the accused teacher allegedly asks the student to visit his office to collect question papers for two ongoing examinations. Officials said the university handed over the audio clips to police on a pen drive. In one recording, the professor allegedly asks the student to meet him once every week in return for academic favours. Another clip reportedly captures him offering financial help while repeatedly pressuring the student despite her refusal.
Student Protest and Campus Outrage
The allegations have triggered protests on the university campus, with members of several student organisations demanding the immediate arrest and termination of the professor. Protesters staged demonstrations outside the proctor’s office, raising slogans against the university administration. The student had earlier approached the university’s Internal Complaint Committee dealing with sexual harassment complaints. She later submitted a formal complaint at the proctor’s office along with representatives of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter. The viral audio clips have become a key piece of evidence, and police are working to verify their authenticity. The case has highlighted concerns about the safety and integrity of the examination process at the university.
