In a significant move to protect young students from harmful substances, the Ludhiana Police Commissionerate has launched a rigorous campaign targeting the illegal sale of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes near educational institutions across the city.
Special Drive Against Tobacco Vendors
The police initiative, led under the direct supervision of Commissioner of Police Kuldeep Singh Chahal, aims to create a safe and healthy environment for school children. The campaign specifically focuses on vendors and shopkeepers operating within 100 yards of school premises, who have been illegally selling tobacco products and e-cigarettes to minors.
During the initial phase of the drive, police teams conducted thorough inspections of 15 different shops and vendors located near various schools throughout Ludhiana. The operation revealed several violations of tobacco control laws, particularly those prohibiting sales in close proximity to educational institutions.
Strict Legal Action Promised
Commissioner Chahal has issued clear directives to all police officers to maintain zero tolerance against those flouting tobacco control regulations. "We will not compromise on the health and safety of our children," stated the Commissioner, emphasizing the seriousness of the campaign.
The police have warned that any shopkeeper found violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) provisions will face immediate legal consequences. This includes stringent action against those selling tobacco products to minors and operating within the prohibited distance from educational institutions.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Actions
The special campaign is not a one-time event but rather part of a sustained effort to eliminate the availability of tobacco and e-cigarettes to school children. Police teams will continue regular monitoring and conduct surprise checks to ensure compliance with the law.
Authorities have also appealed to school administrations, parents, and local residents to report any instances of illegal tobacco sales near educational institutions. The police have assured prompt action on such complaints, reinforcing their commitment to creating a tobacco-free environment for the city's youth.
This initiative comes as part of broader efforts to address growing concerns about increasing tobacco and e-cigarette usage among teenagers and young adults in urban areas. The Ludhiana Police Commissionerate's proactive approach sets a strong precedent for other cities to follow in protecting children from substance abuse.
