Four-Storey Lodge Collapses in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur District, Killing One
A tragic building collapse in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district has resulted in one fatality and the rescue of three individuals, with ongoing efforts to search for potential survivors. The incident occurred on Saturday evening around 5:30 PM when a four-storey lodge near the bus stand in Kotma town suddenly gave way, trapping guests, staff, and laborers under heavy debris.
Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud, thunderous sound just before the structure collapsed, sending clouds of dust billowing across the area. The nearly 10-year-old building, operated by Lallu Agarwal, housed several occupants at the time of the disaster. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately, initiating rescue operations by pulling out the injured before official teams could arrive.
Anuppur Superintendent of Police Moti Ur Rahman confirmed the casualties, stating, "One person has died and three have been rescued so far. Further rescue operations are actively ongoing." The collapse also caused significant damage to adjacent shops, compounding the chaos in the busy locality.
Allegations of Delayed Official Response and Rescue Efforts
Local community members have raised serious concerns, alleging a noticeable delay in the arrival of police and administrative officials at the collapse site. They emphasized that the initial life-saving efforts were predominantly carried out by civilians and volunteers from the area.
In response, authorities later mobilized over 100 personnel, including teams from SECL Jamuna Kotma, to clear the debris and conduct thorough searches for anyone still trapped. Rescue work continued uninterrupted until the filing of this report, with officials urging the public to avoid gathering at the site to prevent hindering operations.
Possible Cause and Ongoing Investigations
Preliminary investigations by police suggest that excavation work being conducted in a neighboring house may have critically weakened the lodge's structural integrity. "Digging work was going on in a house next to the lodge, which may have compromised the foundation. The collapse occurred during this activity," explained police officials.
Hospitals in both Kotma and Anuppur have been placed on high alert to provide emergency medical treatment to the injured. The district administration has officially ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to determine the exact causes and assess potential negligence.
This devastating event underscores urgent concerns regarding building safety regulations and emergency response protocols in the region, as authorities work to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
