The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted bail to YouTuber Savukku Shankar in connection with an attempt-to-murder case that was registered against him while he was imprisoned at Puzhal Central Prison. Vacation judge Justice L Victoria Gowri passed the order while allowing a plea moved by Shankar.
Case Background
According to the plea, an FIR was registered against Shankar and four others on April 8 under Sections 296(b), 125, 132, 109(1), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The prosecution alleged that Shankar was arrested in another case in Andhra Pradesh and was being brought to Chennai by road. The police vehicle was stopped near Kavankarai for a break, at which point K Malathi, S Gopinath, Praveen, and Raju picked a quarrel with the police personnel, abused them, and began pelting stones at them.
Court's Decision
Justice Gowri, after hearing the arguments, granted bail to Shankar, subject to certain conditions. The court noted that the allegations required further investigation and that the accused had been in custody for a considerable period. The bail order came as a relief to Shankar, who has been involved in multiple legal cases.
The YouTuber, known for his critical views on the Tamil Nadu government, has faced several criminal cases in recent years. His supporters have claimed that the cases are politically motivated, while the state government has denied such allegations.
