Maharashtra Government Approves C-60 Service Medal for Special Operations Squad

The Maharashtra government has officially approved the institution of the 'C-60 Service Medal' for personnel serving in the Special Operations Squad (C-60). This significant move aims to recognize the exceptional contributions and bravery of these commandos in countering armed Maoist activities across the state.

Medal Distribution and Announcement Details

Starting from the financial year 2026-27, the Director General of Police (DGP) will announce the names of the medal recipients on the eve of Maharashtra Day, which falls on May 1. This annual ceremony will highlight the dedication and valor of the C-60 squad members.

History and Evolution of the C-60 Squad

The C-60 squad was established on December 1, 1990, with an initial strength of just 60 personnel, specifically tasked with combating armed Maoist activities in Maharashtra. Over the years, it has evolved into a formidable force. Currently, the squad operates with 29 units in Gadchiroli district, each comprising 28 personnel, and nine units in Gondia district, each with 20 personnel, as confirmed by an official statement.

Operational Challenges and Duties

These highly trained commandos are engaged in a range of critical operations, including area domination, long-range and short-range patrolling, and intelligence-based missions. They operate in challenging environments such as dense forests, mountainous terrain, rivers, and streams, often under extremely adverse weather conditions, showcasing their resilience and expertise.

Recognition of Bravery and Achievements

Over the years, C-60 personnel have demonstrated exceptional bravery, earning numerous accolades. To date, they have received 320 Police Gallantry Medals, six President's Gallantry Medals, eight Meritorious Service Medals, and two Shaurya Chakras. The new C-60 Service Medal follows the pattern of special service medals previously awarded to members of Force One and the Quick Response Team, further institutionalizing recognition for their service.

Eligibility Criteria for the Medal

Eligibility for the C-60 Service Medal is stringent. Former and serving members must have completed either two consecutive years of service as officers or three years as Amaldars in the squad. Additionally, they must maintain an outstanding service record over the last five years. This ensures that the medal is awarded to those who have consistently demonstrated excellence and commitment.

Distribution Plan for the Medal

In the initial phase, up to 500 medals will be distributed annually for the first two years. From the third year onward, the distribution will be more selective, with only deserving candidates receiving the medal based on merit and performance. This phased approach aims to honor a broad base of personnel initially while maintaining high standards for future awards.

The introduction of the C-60 Service Medal underscores the Maharashtra government's commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices and heroism of its security forces, particularly in the ongoing fight against Maoist insurgency.
