A 38-year-old man from Maharashtra's Nandurbar district has been booked for allegedly raping a woman and defrauding her of Rs 41.25 lakh after posing as a millionaire businessman on a matrimonial website, police said on Sunday.
Victim's Background and Initial Contact
The 36-year-old complainant, a divorcee, resides in the Kalyan East area of Thane district with her child, according to an official from Kolsewadi police station. The accused allegedly created a fraudulent profile on the matrimonial site, claiming to be a wealthy hotelier and civil engineer. He gained the woman's trust by promising marriage and accepting her child, police said.
Sexual Assault and Financial Fraud
After building trust, the accused allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulted the woman at hotels in Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and at her home in Kalyan. The police official stated, "The accused swindled Rs 41.25 lakh from her, forged documents to sell one of her cars, and unauthorisedly seized another vehicle," citing the First Information Report (FIR).
Police Investigation and Suspicions
Police suspect the accused has targeted more women using the same modus operandi. Efforts are being made to track him down, the official added. The case highlights the risks of online matrimonial platforms and the need for vigilance.
