The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step in the fight against human trafficking by constituting a state-level committee under the leadership of the chief secretary. This 11-member panel is tasked with reviewing areas that are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking, with a special emphasis on children, as well as evaluating the preventive actions already in place.

The formation of this panel comes in response to the Supreme Court's expression of grave concerns over what it described as a "lackadaisical" approach by many states and union territories in implementing its 2025 judgment.

The Supreme Court's 2025 judgment aimed at dismantling organised trafficking networks included specific directives, one of which was the formation of state-level monitoring committees. Maharashtra's move aligns with this directive, highlighting the state's commitment to combating this serious crime. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data from 2023 underscores the urgency of this issue, reporting that 6,288 persons were trafficked, including 2,687 children. In the same year, 6,043 individuals were rescued, and 6,024 arrests were made for trafficking-related offenses.
