Bikram Singh Majithia, a prominent leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has strongly condemned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for its alleged involvement in the 'Gaddar' (traitor) graffiti that appeared on the residences of several Punjab Members of Parliament (MPs). The graffiti, which was spray-painted overnight, targeted MPs from various parties, accusing them of betraying the state's interests.
Majithia's Accusations
In a press conference held in Amritsar, Majithia stated that the graffiti was a cowardly act orchestrated by AAP to intimidate opposition leaders. He claimed that the AAP government in Punjab was using such tactics to silence dissent. "This is a clear example of the AAP's fascist mindset. They cannot tolerate criticism and resort to vandalism to threaten those who speak against them," Majithia said.
Political Reactions
The incident has sparked a political firestorm in Punjab, with multiple parties demanding a thorough investigation. The MPs whose homes were targeted include members of the Congress, SAD, and other regional parties. Many have expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state under AAP rule.
Meanwhile, AAP spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless. "Majithia is trying to divert attention from the real issues. We condemn any act of vandalism and have nothing to do with it," Kang said. He added that the party has urged the police to identify and punish the culprits.
Background
The term 'Gaddar' has been used in recent political discourse in Punjab, particularly during the farmers' protests and the ongoing tension between the state government and the central government. The graffiti appeared on the walls of at least five MPs' residences in different parts of the state, including Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter. CCTV footage from the areas is being examined to trace the perpetrators.
Broader Implications
Political analysts believe that this incident could further strain relations between the AAP government and the opposition. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of the state's policing. The opposition has demanded that the Chief Minister personally address the issue and ensure the safety of elected representatives.
Majithia concluded by warning that such actions would not be tolerated and that the SAD would launch a statewide protest if the culprits were not apprehended soon.
