Security Forces Uncover Major Maoist Arms Cache in Odisha's Kandhamal District

In a significant breakthrough against Left-wing extremism, security forces have seized a substantial cache of Maoist items, including a large arsenal of arms and ammunition, from the Matabarhi forest in Kandhamal district. The operation, conducted under the jurisdiction of the Daringbadi police station, was announced by police officials on Tuesday.

Details of the Seized Items

The confiscated weapons and materials include:

  • Seven firearms
  • Approximately 100 rounds of ammunition
  • 10 SBGL grenades
  • 30 electric detonators
  • 5 walkie-talkies
  • Several Maoist literature pieces
  • Medicines, ration items, and utensils

These items were discovered concealed within a cave during an anti-Maoist operation on Monday. The operation was a joint effort by the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG), covering multiple areas such as Pakari, Babuti, Jamabarhi, Matabarhi, and Gaburi over a two-day period.

Ongoing Anti-Maoist Efforts

According to Superintendent of Police (Kandhamal) Harish BC, the operation highlights the continued vigilance of security forces despite the passing of the Centre's March 31 deadline to end Left-wing extremism. "The anti-Maoist operation will go on," emphasized the SP, noting that an estimated 8 to 9 Maoist cadres remain active in the district.

Police reports indicate that female cadres outnumber their male counterparts within the group. Interestingly, only one cadre is from Odisha, specifically the Rayagada district's Kashipur area, while the others hail from Chhattisgarh. In a call for peace, the SP urged the group to surrender, stating, "We appeal to the group to surrender."

This seizure marks a critical step in curbing Maoist activities in the region, underscoring the persistent efforts of security forces to maintain law and order in Odisha's forested areas.
