Man Arrested After Woman Allegedly Raped in Somerset Attack

A man in his 20s has been arrested after a woman was allegedly punched and raped during an early-hours attack in Wellington, Somerset. The incident was reported to have taken place in the North Street area of the town at approximately 2 am on Friday.

Police stated that the suspect allegedly assaulted the woman before fleeing the scene in a car. According to reports from The Sun, the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Specialist officers are continuing to provide support to the victim.

Arrest and Investigation

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a man was arrested overnight in Sussex on suspicion of rape and remains in custody. Officers have also seized a vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation. Detectives had earlier appealed for information relating to a white Volkswagen Golf believed to be linked to the incident.

Detective Inspector Wendy Fellowes thanked members of the public who had already come forward with information and CCTV footage. She said officers were continuing to review footage from areas including Waterloo Road, North Street, High Street, Fore Street, and Taunton Road between 1 am and 2.30 am on Friday. Police enquiries remain ongoing.

The victim has been discharged from the hospital and is receiving support from specialist officers. The police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
