In a significant crackdown on online job fraud, the Delhi Police have arrested a 35-year-old man from Ghaziabad for allegedly cheating a woman by promising her employment with an airline. The accused used a sophisticated web of fake emails, messages, and forged documents to convince his victim and siphon off money.
The Modus Operandi of the Fraud
The case came to light when Ritu Singh, a resident of Delhi, filed a formal complaint with the police. She stated that she was first approached via an email, which was later followed up with messages from a mobile number. The fraudsters, posing as airline recruitment officials, meticulously built her confidence.
Under the pretext of various job-related formalities, she was manipulated into making multiple payments. These payments were demanded for purported job processing fees, uniform charges, and other administrative costs. The victim, hopeful for the promised position, complied until she realized she had been deceived.
Technical Investigation Leads to Arrest
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam stated that a specialized police team took up the investigation. They employed a multi-pronged technical approach, analyzing the call detail records (CDR) of the numbers used, conducting technical surveillance, and tracking the digital footprints left by the accused.
This thorough probe led the investigators to Ghaziabad in neighboring Uttar Pradesh. Based on the gathered evidence, a raid was conducted, resulting in the arrest of the accused, identified as Rohit Mishra, aged 35.
Recovery of Incriminating Evidence
During the search operation, the police recovered crucial evidence that laid bare the fraud scheme. The seized items included:
- A mobile phone containing a WhatsApp profile saved under the name of a genuine airline.
- Multiple QR codes used for receiving fraudulent payments.
- A fake Letter of Intent (LOI) meant to falsely assure victims of job selection.
- Several other forged documents crafted specifically to commit job fraud.
Police further disclosed that Rohit Mishra has a history of similar offences, having been involved in a prior cheating case. This arrest highlights the persistent threat posed by organized online fraud rings targeting job seekers.
The arrest serves as a stern warning to cyber criminals and a reminder for the public to exercise extreme caution when dealing with unsolicited job offers, especially those demanding upfront payments. The Delhi Police have reiterated the importance of verifying the authenticity of recruitment processes directly with the concerned companies through official channels.
