A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl while she was asleep on a train traveling from Kerala to Tamil Nadu. The incident took place on the Ernakulam-Agartala Express on the night of January 15.
Details of the Incident
The victim, a resident of Tamil Nadu, was traveling with her family from Kerala to Tamil Nadu. She was asleep in the sleeper coach when the accused, identified as Ramesh, allegedly touched her inappropriately. The girl woke up and screamed, alerting her parents and other passengers. The accused was caught by fellow passengers and handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at the next station.
Arrest and Legal Action
The RPF arrested the accused and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. The victim and her family were provided with assistance and counseling.
Railway authorities have emphasized the importance of passenger safety and urged travelers to report any suspicious activity immediately. The incident has sparked outrage among passengers, with many calling for stricter security measures on trains.
