Varanasi Man Arrested After Viral Video Shows Alcohol Consumption on Ganga Boat
A man was arrested in Varanasi on Tuesday following the circulation of a viral video on social media that depicted him drinking alcohol while on a boat in the sacred Ganga river. The incident has drawn significant attention and sparked political debate in Uttar Pradesh.
Police Action and Investigation Details
The accused has been identified as Arjun Rajbhar, who works as a boat decorator in the area. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Gaurav Kumar, the video showed two men consuming alcohol while riding a boat on the Ganga. "One of them has been identified and taken into custody," ACP Kumar stated. "A formal complaint was filed at the Bhelupur police station, leading to the registration of a case. Further investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain all details and identify the second individual involved."
Context of Previous Viral Incidents
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Varanasi. Earlier, during the holy month of Ramadan, another video went viral showing an iftar party on a large boat, with allegations that participants were disposing of biryani bones and waste directly into the Ganga river. These events highlight ongoing concerns about behavior and pollution in the revered waterway.
Political Reactions and Criticism
Reacting to the arrest, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government. Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Yadav remarked, "Is this something new? People are drinking everywhere. Since the BJP came to power, alcohol consumption has risen due to the stress and difficulties faced by citizens." His comments add a political dimension to the incident, linking it to broader societal issues under the current administration.
Broader Implications and Public Response
The viral video and subsequent arrest have ignited discussions on social media and among locals about respect for religious sentiments and environmental protection. The Ganga river holds immense cultural and spiritual significance in India, making such acts particularly sensitive. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum and legality in public spaces, especially in heritage cities like Varanasi.
As the investigation progresses, police are urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified content and to report any similar incidents. The case underscores the challenges of balancing personal freedoms with communal harmony and legal compliance in today's digital age.
