In a startling case of deception, the Dispur police in Guwahati have apprehended a man for fabricating a robbery story to conceal his own financial misdeeds. The individual, identified as Dhruba Kalita, a resident of Sipajhar in Darrang district, was taken into custody on Tuesday for filing a fraudulent complaint about the theft of Rs 7 lakh, an amount he had himself misappropriated from his employer.
The Fabricated Snatching Incident
Kalita, an employee of a private company, reportedly embezzled the substantial sum from company funds. In a bid to cover his tracks, he orchestrated an elaborate false narrative. On Monday afternoon, he approached the Bhagaduttapur police outpost with a complaint claiming that unidentified assailants had sedated him using a spray near his rented residence in the Sarusajai area and fled with the cash.
Acting swiftly on his complaint, personnel from the police outpost and the Dispur police station initiated an investigation. However, the story began to unravel almost immediately. Mrinal Deka, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), stated that when police began scrutinizing the details, CCTV footage from the vicinity revealed glaring inconsistencies in Kalita's statements.
Investigation Uncovers the Truth
A thorough inquiry confirmed that no snatching incident had occurred. Instead, the probe led investigators to Kalita's rented home, where the entire Rs 7 lakh was discovered hidden. The police successfully recovered the full amount that he had claimed was stolen.
The investigation conclusively proved that Kalita had attempted to mislead the authorities with false information to disguise his act of fund misappropriation. Following the probe, the Dispur police arrested him on Tuesday.
Legal Action Under the New Law
The police have registered a suo motu case against Dhruba Kalita under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. Bhaskar Malla Patowary, the Officer-in-Charge of Dispur police station, emphasized that the case was filed based on clear evidence of both the embezzlement and the deliberate submission of false information intended to mislead the police machinery.
This case serves as a strong warning against attempting to misuse police resources and the legal system to conceal criminal activities. The swift police work, which relied on technological evidence like CCTV footage, ensured the quick resolution of the fraud and the recovery of the embezzled money.
