Man arrested for hacking brother to death over land dispute

A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hacking his elder brother to death over a land dispute in Angul district, Odisha. The accused, identified as Bipin Sitha (26), attacked his brother Titun Sitha (32) with an axe on Sunday night.

Incident Details

Titun and Bipin Sitha lived separately with their families at Pokunda village under Purunakote police station limits. The brothers often quarrelled over their shares in ancestral land. On Sunday around 10:30 pm, they had another argument, during which Bipin allegedly struck Titun with an axe, leaving him critically injured.

Titun was rushed to Angul district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Legal Action

On Monday, their eldest brother, Sankar Sitha, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Purunakote police station, accusing Bipin of killing Titun. Police and a forensic team visited the village, recovered the body, and began an investigation. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family.

Bipin was detained for questioning and later arrested. “The accused was arrested for killing his elder brother, and our further investigation is underway,” said Prakash Patra, Inspector-in-Charge of Purunakote police station. Police seized the axe used in the crime.

The dispute over ancestral land had been a source of conflict between the brothers for some time. The incident highlights the tragic consequences of unresolved property disputes in rural areas.
