Delhi Police Crack Down on Illegal LPG Cylinder Operation in Jamia Nagar
In a significant enforcement action, Delhi Police have apprehended a 28-year-old man for allegedly running an unlawful LPG cylinder supply business in the Jamia Nagar area of southeast Delhi. The accused, identified as Shahnawaz, was caught during routine police patrolling near Yamuna Pusta. Officers spotted him beside a mini truck loaded with LPG cylinders and, upon inspection, he failed to produce any valid licence or authorisation for storing or selling the gas. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Hemant Tiwari confirmed that the vehicle contained 48 filled and 14 empty cylinders, indicating an active distribution network.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Shahnawaz was selling these cylinders to local residents without issuing receipts or maintaining proper documentation, a clear violation of norms under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. This illegal operation not only bypassed regulatory checks but also posed potential safety risks to the community.
Supply Chain and Modus Operandi
During questioning, Shahnawaz disclosed that he procured the cylinders through an associate named Mukesh, who arranged them from near a gas agency in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The cylinders were transported to Delhi in a pickup vehicle before being transferred to the mini truck for local distribution in Jamia Nagar. Investigators noted that Shahnawaz had moved approximately 70 cylinders from Uttar Pradesh just a day before his arrest and had already sold several at inflated rates, exploiting demand in the area.
The police have registered a case under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, underscoring the seriousness of the offence.
