In a significant breakthrough, the Chennai police have apprehended a 45-year-old man for the brutal murder of an 80-year-old woman in her own home, a crime motivated by robbery. The arrest comes two weeks after the elderly victim, Alangaram, was found dead with severe head injuries.
The Grisly Discovery in Nathanallur
The incident came to light on December 18 in Nathanallur village. Alangaram, who lived alone, was last seen by her son and one of her four daughters the previous night. They had visited her, served dinner, and left. When the octogenarian did not emerge from her house the next morning, concerned neighbours decided to check on her.
To their horror, they found her lying in a pool of blood inside the residence. She had sustained critical injuries to her head. The Walajabad police were immediately informed and rushed to the scene. The body was sent to the Chengalpet Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Intensive Probe Leads to Arrest
Launching an intensive search for the culprit, police investigators zeroed in on a suspect from the same locality. The authorities arrested Ramarajan, 45, a resident of Bharathiyar Street in Nathanallur colony, Tambaram.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime. Ramarajan stated that he was aware the woman lived alone and attacked her with the intention of stealing her gold jewellery and money. He claimed he assaulted her when she tried to raise an alarm during the robbery attempt.
Following his confession, the police recovered two sovereigns of gold from his possession. Investigations also revealed that Ramarajan had a prior criminal record and was involved in an attempt to murder case last year.
Justice Process Begins
The accused was formally produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody. The Walajabad police have confirmed that further investigation into the case is ongoing to uncover any additional details or potential accomplices.
This tragic case has highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by elderly citizens living alone and has sent shockwaves through the Nathanallur community. The swift arrest has brought a measure of relief, as the police continue their probe.
