Man Arrested for Violent Rampage in Kozhikode Hospital Labour Room

A 24-year-old man was arrested by the Pariyaram Medical College police following a violent rampage in the hospital's labour room on Friday night. The incident, which caused significant disruption and property damage, has raised concerns about safety in healthcare institutions.

Details of the Arrested Individual

The arrested person has been identified as Rashid P K, son of Said Muhammed, a resident of Ozhinjavalappu in Kanhangad. Police suspect that he was under the influence of some substance, as he behaved very erratically during the attack, which began at 7:30 PM.

Sequence of Events Leading to Violence

The man entered the labour room and demanded the immediate discharge of his wife, who was admitted for treatment. When the duty medical staff refused to grant the discharge without a doctor's permission due to her clinical condition, Rashid turned violent. He vandalised the labour room entrance and destroyed hospital furniture, causing estimated damage of Rs 15,000.

The situation escalated further as he abused the staff and others in the area, threatening to kill them. The nursing officer filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR against him.

Legal Charges and Judicial Proceedings

Rashid has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for:

  • Trespassing
  • Committing mischief and thereby causing loss or damage to the public or to any person
  • Criminal intimidation
  • Uttering obscene words in a public place

Additionally, police invoked Section 4(1)(ii) of the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012. This section pertains to committing or attempting to commit an act of violence against healthcare service persons or causing damage to property in a healthcare institution.

The accused was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody, highlighting the serious legal consequences of such actions in healthcare settings.

Broader Implications for Hospital Security

This incident underscores the vulnerability of healthcare workers and the need for enhanced security measures in hospitals. The use of specific legislation like the Kerala Healthcare Act demonstrates a growing legal framework to protect medical facilities from violence.

Authorities are investigating the case further to determine the full extent of the substance influence and any prior incidents involving the accused. The hospital administration has been advised to review its security protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
