Major Drug Bust in Coimbatore
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trade, the Kavundampalayam police in Coimbatore apprehended a 27-year-old man on Wednesday for allegedly possessing 171 grams of methamphetamine, a potent synthetic drug intended for sale in the local market.
The Accused and His Background
The arrested individual has been identified as R Peter alias Ramesh, 27, originally from Munnar in Kerala. According to police records, Peter was currently residing in TVS Nagar within Coimbatore district and had been employed at a private company in Gandhipuram for approximately five months.
Investigators revealed that Peter, who is unmarried, had developed an addiction to synthetic drugs and subsequently established connections with drug suppliers operating from Bengaluru. This connection marked the beginning of his alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities.
The Drug Supply Operation
Police investigation uncovered that Peter regularly traveled to Bengaluru once every week using his motorcycle to procure methamphetamine. He reportedly purchased the synthetic drug at a rate of ₹2,500 per gram from his Bengaluru contacts.
Upon returning to Coimbatore, Peter allegedly distributed the narcotics to his acquaintances in the Kavundampalayam area, selling each gram of methamphetamine for ₹7,000 - nearly triple his purchase price, generating substantial profits from the illegal trade.
The Arrest and Investigation
The breakthrough came when Peter made another trip to Bengaluru on Saturday. Acting on a credible tip-off, law enforcement agencies began closely monitoring his movements, tracking his live location throughout his journey.
Peter returned to Coimbatore from Bengaluru on Tuesday night, unaware that police were surveilling his activities. The Kavundampalayam police team moved swiftly and arrested him on Wednesday, subsequently recovering the entire 171 grams of methamphetamine from his possession.
The accused has been remanded in judicial custody as investigations continue to uncover potential links to broader drug networks and identify other individuals involved in the distribution chain.
