In a significant breakthrough, Bihar Police have arrested a 40-year-old man from Guwahati, Assam, in connection with the murder of a teenage girl in Samastipur district that occurred approximately four months ago. The accused, identified as Kumud Kumar alias Deepak, was apprehended after an extensive manhunt that spanned multiple states.
The Crime and Confession
According to police officials, the tragic incident took place on August 11 within the jurisdiction of the Shivajinagar police station in Samastipur. The victim was 19-year-old Gudiya Kumari. During interrogation, the arrested man, Kumud Kumar, provided a chilling motive for the crime.
Kumud confessed that he was in a relationship with and wished to marry Gudiya's elder sister. However, he alleged that Gudiya was strongly opposed to their union. "I wanted to marry my girlfriend, but her family members, especially my girlfriend's younger sister Gudiya, were against our relationship," Kumud stated, as per police records. He claimed that Gudiya's persistent opposition became an obstacle, leading him to take the extreme step of shooting her.
In a further alarming revelation, Kumud admitted that after killing Gudiya, he also intended to murder his girlfriend but fled the scene due to fear of being caught.
The Cross-State Manhunt and Arrest
Following the incident, Samastipur SP Arvind Pratap Singh constituted a special police team to track down the fugitive. The investigation revealed that Kumud had fled Bihar soon after the crime. Rosera SDPO Sanjay Sinha explained that the police received intelligence a few days ago indicating the accused was hiding in Guwahati.
A dedicated police team then traveled to Assam and remained there for ten days to lay a trap. Their efforts culminated on Tuesday when, with the assistance of Jyoti Nagar police and local residents, they arrested Kumud from RPF Colony Road in Guwahati.
The arrest was complicated by the fact that Kumud had actively attempted to evade capture by altering his appearance. "The accused changed his appearance, which made it take some time to identify him," SDPO Sinha noted. Police said Kumud had shaved his beard and hair and was living in a rented accommodation in Guwahati under false pretenses.
Background and Legal Proceedings
Investigators disclosed that Kumud Kumar is a resident of Neemganj village in the Biharsharif police station area of Nalanda district. He was employed as the principal of a private school in Baheri.
After committing the crime, his escape route involved first fleeing to Khagaria and then boarding a train to Guwahati. The accused was formally brought back to Samastipur on Wednesday and subsequently sent to judicial custody. The police have confirmed that he was evading arrest for nearly four months before his capture this week.
This arrest brings a sense of closure to a prolonged investigation and highlights inter-state police cooperation in apprehending a murder suspect who had gone to great lengths to disguise his identity and location.
