The Karnataka government has identified 56 villages in the state as being prone to flash floods, specifically those that could be affected by the Bennihalla and Tupparihalla rivers. According to official sources, the list includes 26 villages in Navalgund taluk and 17 villages in Kundgol taluk, both located in the Dharwad district. The remaining 13 villages are spread across other areas within the region.
Preparedness Measures Underway
In response to the heightened risk, the Fire and Emergency Services Department conducted a mock drill at Unkal Lake in Hubballi on Thursday. The exercise aimed to demonstrate rescue operations and enhance the preparedness of personnel in handling potential flood emergencies. Officials emphasized the importance of such drills in ensuring swift and effective response during actual disasters.
Historical Context and Recent Alerts
The identification of these villages comes ahead of the monsoon season, during which flash floods have historically caused significant damage in the region. The Bennihalla and Tupparihalla rivers, which are tributaries of the larger river systems in northern Karnataka, often swell rapidly after heavy rainfall, leading to sudden flooding in low-lying areas. Authorities have issued advisories to residents in these villages to remain vigilant and follow evacuation protocols if necessary.
Community Involvement and Future Steps
Local administrations are working closely with village panchayats to disseminate information about flood risks and safety measures. Additionally, efforts are being made to strengthen early warning systems and ensure that relief supplies are pre-positioned in strategic locations. The government has also urged residents to cooperate with disaster response teams and participate in awareness programs organized by the district authorities.
