Man beaten to death over dowry in Pilibhit, five arrested

A 24-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his sister's husband and her in-laws after he, along with his father and uncle, went to their house to resolve a dowry-related dispute in Sherpur Kalan village. Police said on Saturday that five accused have been arrested in the case.

Incident Details

The incident took place around 10 pm on Friday when an argument broke out during talks between the two families. According to police, the accused assaulted the trio with sticks. The victim's sister, Neha Khan, 26, who is one month pregnant, was also injured while trying to protect her family. All the injured were taken to a nearby community health centre. Jeeshan, who worked as a labourer, was later referred to Autonomous State Medical College in Pilibhit, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Complaint and Allegations

In his complaint, Jeeshan's father Irshad Khan alleged that he had married his daughter to Hasib Khan around four years ago, but Hasib harassed her for a bike and cash as additional dowry. He further alleged that Hasib had on several occasions locked Neha inside a room after gagging her.

SHO Pawan Pandey said, "A case has been registered against Hasib and four of his family members, including his two brothers, under BNS section 85 (cruelty to a woman by husband), 352 (intentional insult), 103 (1) (murder), 191 (2) (rioting), 118 (1) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 3 (5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention)."
