Man Succumbs to Injuries After Mob Attack in Chatra District
A tragic incident unfolded in Chatra district, Jharkhand, where a 40-year-old man lost his life after being brutally assaulted by a mob on suspicion of being a child lifter. The victim, identified as Rambali Rajwar, a resident of Barwatoli village in the adjoining Ramgarh district, was attacked on Sunday evening in the Chiraiyatand area.
Details of the Fatal Assault
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Sunday when Rajwar was seen loitering in the locality. A group of individuals, suspecting him of involvement in child-lifting activities, subjected him to a severe thrashing. A police team from the Piparwar station promptly intervened, rescuing Rajwar and rushing him to a local hospital for initial medical care.
Due to the critical nature of his injuries, he was later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, Rajwar succumbed to his injuries on Monday, marking a grim outcome to the violent episode.
Police Investigation and Statements
Abhay Kumar, the officer-in-charge of Piparwar police station, confirmed the death and stated, "The injured man died during treatment. The matter is being investigated. The situation will become clear after the report of post-mortem arrives. We have launched a probe into the incident and are identifying those involved in the assault." As of now, no First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged, but authorities are actively pursuing the case.
Prabhat Ranjan Barwar, the Tandwa subdivisional police officer, provided additional context, noting that Rajwar's family members revealed he had been in Mcluskieganj, Ranchi district, for epilepsy treatment. "However, it is not clear when he wandered off. He reached Chiraiyatand on Sunday. It is a matter of investigation how he reached," Barwar added, highlighting the ongoing inquiries into the circumstances leading to the attack.
Surge in Similar Mob Attacks Across Jharkhand
This incident is not isolated, as Chatra district joins Bokaro and East Singhbhum districts in witnessing a recent spate of mob attacks fueled by child-lifting suspicions. Over the past week, more than half a dozen such cases have been reported in Bokaro and East Singhbhum alone. In most instances, police have managed to intervene in time to rescue the victims, preventing further harm.
In response to this alarming trend, the Bokaro administration has taken proactive measures. Two days prior to this incident, Bokaro Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nath Jha announced the identification of approximately 300 social media handles accused of spreading rumors and inciting tension. A thorough probe is underway to take appropriate action against those responsible for disseminating false information that fuels such violence.
Broader Implications and Community Concerns
The death of Rambali Rajwar underscores the severe consequences of mob justice and the dangers posed by unchecked rumors. Such incidents not only result in tragic loss of life but also erode community trust and public safety. Authorities are urging citizens to rely on official channels for information and report suspicions to law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on bringing the perpetrators to justice and addressing the root causes of these attacks to prevent future occurrences. The community and law enforcement agencies are called upon to work together in fostering a safer environment for all residents.
