A 32-year-old man from Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh allegedly died by suicide after his electricity connection was removed over unpaid bills. The incident occurred in Asara village under Ramala police station area.
Family's Account
According to the victim's family, Mohd Amjad was a truck driver who had returned home during Eid to care for his ailing mother, Rukhsana, who suffers from asthma. His younger brother, Mohsin, stated that the house's electricity supply had been disconnected in 2023 due to outstanding dues. Since then, a junior engineer (JE) had arranged a temporary power supply through a cable connected to a nearby pole and was collecting Rs 1,000 every month from the family.
On June 3, the JE came to the house, disconnected the temporary supply, and demanded immediate payment of the entire outstanding amount. When the family requested more time, he became aggressive and misbehaved in front of neighbors. Upset by this, Amjad allegedly died by suicide. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan the next morning.
Financial Strain
Mohsin further explained that their mother's condition worsened after the electricity was disconnected in the hot weather. The family spends money on her regular treatment, making it financially difficult. Villagers tried to help by collecting money to settle the power dues, but it was not enough.
Police Response
Baghpat Superintendent of Police Suraj Rai confirmed that a formal complaint was received on Monday. He stated that the allegations made by the family are being examined and an investigation is underway.
Power Department's Stand
The power department denied any direct link between their action and Amjad's death. Executive engineer Brijesh Kumar Yadav said the consumer had electricity dues of around Rs 29,000 and that repeated notices had been issued over the years. He added that the exact circumstances behind the suicide will become clear after investigation.
