The pandemic period witnessed the highest number of dowry deaths and domestic cruelty cases in Delhi over the last five years, according to official data accessed by PTI.
Dowry Death Statistics
In 2021, the national capital reported 141 dowry death cases, the highest in the five-year period. The numbers have since declined: 131 in 2022, 115 in 2023, 109 in 2024, and 99 in 2025. As of May 15, 2026, 28 such cases have been registered this year.
Domestic Cruelty Cases
Alongside dowry deaths, cases of domestic cruelty also peaked during the pandemic. The data indicates a correlation between lockdown restrictions and increased domestic violence incidents.
Authorities attribute the decline in recent years to stricter enforcement of laws and increased awareness campaigns. However, activists argue that underreporting remains a challenge.
The data underscores the need for continued vigilance and support for victims of domestic abuse.
