Man Crushed by Falling Tree in Delhi Park, Police Cite Old Hollow Trunk

In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old man lost his life after being crushed under a fallen tree in a park located in southwest Delhi's Uttam Nagar area on Friday evening. The victim has been identified as Kalu, a resident of D Block, Shiv Vihar in Uttam Nagar.

According to police reports, Kalu worked as a guard at a private company and resided in Delhi with his two sisters. He was sitting in the park around 5 pm when the unfortunate event occurred.

Police Response and Investigation Details

A PCR call was received alerting authorities that a tree had fallen inside the park, trapping a man beneath it. Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered that a eucalyptus tree had collapsed. Kalu was extracted from under the tree after a portion of it was cut, but he had already succumbed to his injuries by that time, as confirmed by the police.

A police officer provided further insight, stating that the tree, believed to be old, had become hollow from within, leading to a loss of structural strength. The officer added that the tree was completely uprooted at the time of the incident.

Aftermath and Historical Context

The body was subsequently shifted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. This incident echoes a similar tragedy from last August, when a man died and his daughter suffered serious injuries after a massive old neem tree toppled onto vehicles during heavy rainfall in south Delhi's Kalkaji area. The two were on their motorcycle at the time of that earlier incident.

These events highlight ongoing concerns about the safety of aging trees in urban areas, particularly during adverse weather conditions or due to natural decay. Authorities continue to investigate the Uttam Nagar case to determine if any negligence contributed to the tree's collapse.
