PATNA: A tragic incident unfolded in Bihar's Khagaria district where a man drowned in a pond while reportedly attempting to flee from police custody, officials confirmed on Saturday.
Incident Details
The event occurred at Sabalpur village under the jurisdiction of the Morkahi police station. According to law enforcement authorities, officers apprehended two individuals late Friday night on charges of creating a law and order disturbance and obstructing government work.
Escape and Drowning
During the operation, one of the accused allegedly managed to break free from police custody and jumped into a pond located within a temple compound. Despite immediate search efforts, the police could not locate the man due to darkness. The officers subsequently returned to the station with the second accused.
Discovery and Protest
Local villagers later discovered the man's body and brought it to the police station, where they staged a protest demanding action. Senior police officials arrived at the scene, engaged with the protesters, and successfully de-escalated the situation. Necessary measures were then initiated as per protocol.
Post-Mortem and Investigation
The body has been sent to Khagaria Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Khagaria Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Kumar, stated that a thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway.
