A man who had been on the run for nearly 40 years in connection with the murder of his wife in Delhi was finally arrested, police said on Tuesday. The accused, identified as 65-year-old Ramesh Kumar, was apprehended from a hideout in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district following a tip-off.
The 1986 Murder Case
According to police, Kumar had allegedly killed his wife, Sushma, in their residence in east Delhi's Shahdara area in 1986. The couple had been married for five years and had two children. On the day of the incident, a quarrel broke out between them, during which Kumar allegedly strangled his wife. He then fled the scene, leaving behind his children.
A case was registered at the local police station, and a manhunt was launched. However, Kumar managed to evade arrest for decades by frequently changing his location and identity. He worked as a laborer in various cities and never stayed in one place for long.
Breakthrough in the Case
The case remained unsolved for years until a fresh investigation team took over in 2023. Using modern investigative techniques and old records, the police managed to trace Kumar's movements. A tip-off from a local informant led them to a rented room in Ghaziabad, where Kumar was living under a false name.
Senior police officer Dinesh Kumar said, "The accused had successfully hidden his identity for decades. He had even changed his appearance and used different aliases. However, our team's persistent efforts paid off."
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Kumar was arrested on Monday evening and brought to Delhi on a transit remand. He has been charged with murder under the Indian Penal Code. The police are also investigating whether he had any accomplices who helped him evade capture.
"This arrest demonstrates our commitment to solving old cases and bringing criminals to justice, no matter how much time has passed," added the officer.
Kumar's children, who are now in their 40s, have been informed of the arrest. They expressed relief that their father had finally been caught after so many years.
Significance of the Case
The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking down fugitives who have been on the run for decades. It also underscores the importance of using modern technology and data analysis to solve cold cases.
This arrest brings closure to a nearly 40-year-old case and serves as a reminder that justice can be delayed but not denied.
