A tragic incident on the first day of the New Year claimed the life of a 26-year-old man in Mohali, Punjab. The victim, identified as Mukesh, was stabbed to death after he stepped in to rescue his younger brother from a violent altercation.
How the Fatal Confrontation Unfolded
According to police, the chain of events began with an old and seemingly trivial dispute involving Mukesh's brother-in-law, Balveer, and a few local youths. On Thursday, Mukesh's brother, Mohit, went to meet Balveer and encountered the group. A heated argument soon broke out between Mohit and the youths, escalating into a physical scuffle.
Eyewitnesses reported that during the fight, one of the youths pulled out a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed Mohit in the stomach. Upon receiving information about the fight, Mukesh rushed to the spot. In an attempt to pacify both sides and negotiate peace, he intervened. However, the argument flared up again during the negotiations.
Victim's Desperate Attempt to Pacify Ends in Tragedy
In a fit of rage, one of the assailants turned on Mukesh and stabbed him in the stomach as well. Suffering critical injuries, Mukesh was immediately rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6, Mohali. He was, however, declared brought dead by the doctors. The accused individuals fled the scene immediately after the attack.
The deceased, Mukesh, was a resident of Jujhar Nagar. He is survived by his wife, Lal Kumari, their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, his parents, brother, and sister. Family members revealed that at the time the report was filed, his wife had not yet been informed about his tragic death.
Police Investigation and Background of the Victim
Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu stated that the issue appeared to be old and minor, but the victim lost his life while trying to resolve it. He indicated that there were likely two to three accused persons involved. Inspector Periwinkle Singh Grewal, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Balongi Police Station, confirmed that police teams have been formed and are conducting raids to identify and arrest the culprits.
Preliminary investigations suggest the murder may be linked to an old rivalry. Police are scanning CCTV camera footage from nearby areas to gather evidence and trace the fleeing accused.
Mukesh, who was originally from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, had been living in Mohali for about 26 years after his family shifted there. He worked as a golgappa vendor in Bahlolpur village, Mohali, to support his young family.
