In a horrific incident of mob violence, a 60-year-old man was lynched in Odisha's Cuttack district on suspicion of practicing sorcery. The incident took place in the village of Kantapada under the jurisdiction of the Salepur police station. The victim has been identified as Santosh Behera, a resident of the same village.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the incident occurred late on Tuesday night when a mob gathered at Behera's house and dragged him out. The villagers accused him of using black magic to cause harm to others in the community. The mob allegedly beat him mercilessly with sticks and iron rods, leading to his death on the spot.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Cuttack Rural, B. Yashwant Kumar, confirmed that the victim was killed by a group of villagers who suspected him of sorcery. He stated, "The accused believed that Behera was responsible for several mysterious deaths and illnesses in the village. They took the law into their own hands and lynched him."
Police Action and Arrests
Following the incident, police launched a swift investigation and arrested 25 individuals, including the village head, who are believed to have been part of the mob. The accused have been charged with murder, rioting, and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. SP Kumar added, "We have arrested the main perpetrators and are interrogating them to ascertain the roles of others involved."
The police have also deployed additional forces in the village to maintain law and order and prevent any further violence. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination.
