Dramatic Night Rescue in Palghar: Man Saved from Vaitarna Creek After Train Fall
In a heart-stopping late-night operation, a 32-year-old man who claimed to have fallen from a moving train into the Vaitarna creek was dramatically rescued by vigilant railway staff and local residents. The incident unfolded on Wednesday night near Palghar, Maharashtra, showcasing remarkable community coordination and quick thinking.
The Perilous Situation
The drama began around 10pm when Uday Wangad, a resident of Boisar, was traveling home. According to initial reports, Wangad fell from the moving train into the Vaitarna creek below. Finding himself in the dark waters with strong currents flowing beneath him, Wangad initially managed to cling to a bridge pier for safety.
As the minutes ticked by, Wangad transitioned from holding the pier to grasping iron rods near the structure, fighting against the powerful water currents that threatened to sweep him away. The situation grew increasingly precarious as he remained stranded in the middle of the bridge section.
Alert Railway Staff Spots the Distress
Ramesh Singh, a railway "crack maintainer" on night duty, became the unlikely hero of this rescue story. Around 10:15pm, Singh noticed unusual movement in the water while conducting his routine inspection.
"As Uday saw the light of the torch, which I was using, he called for help and also was splashing water to gain my attention," Singh recounted. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Singh immediately assessed the challenges: Wangad was positioned almost at the center of the bridge, making direct swimming rescue impossible due to the strong currents.
"I told him to wait and hold the iron rods near the pier while I could get some help, else the water current may have swept him," Singh explained, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind in the emergency situation.
Community Mobilization for Rescue
Understanding that immediate action was required, Singh quickly contacted a friend from nearby Wadhiv village who owned a boat. This decision proved crucial to the successful rescue operation.
Guru Patil, shakha pramukh of Shiv Sena (Shinde group) from Wadhiv, responded without hesitation. "I took my boat the moment my friend Ramesh Singh called and we rescued Uday," Patil stated, highlighting the seamless coordination between railway staff and local community members.
Using the boat, the combined team of locals and railway staff managed to navigate the challenging currents and reach Wangad's position. They carefully pulled him to safety, ending what could have been a tragic incident.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the successful rescue, Wangad's family was immediately informed about the incident. His mother arrived at the Vaitarna station master's office, where the relieved but shaken man was handed over to her care.
Police officials have confirmed that the exact circumstances under which Wangad fell from the train are still under investigation. Authorities are working to ascertain whether this was an accidental fall or if other factors were involved in the incident.
